Secretary of State Dean Acheson, 1950 |
Speaker |
McCarthy, Joseph, 1908-1957 |
Description |
Senator McCarthy verbally attacks Secretary of State Dean Acheson, labeling him "the master planner for disaster." Acheson was arguably McCarthy's favorite target in the Truman administration, and this excerpt indicates how the senator portrayed Acheson in public speeches. McCarthy points to Acheson's friendship with Alger Hiss, his favorable comments on the fall of China's Nationalist government, and his approval of a loan to communist Poland as evidence of Acheson's sympathy for international communism. McCarthy delivered these particular remarks at a Republican rally in Hyattsville, Maryland. |
