Description	Melvin "Bus" Shimek shares some of his memories from his 52 year involvement with Marquette University’s track & field and cross-country programs. As a student (1924-1927) Shimek competed as a long distance runner. Coached by Conrad Jennings, Shimek became Marquette’s first All-American in track & field. After graduating, Shimek served as assistant track coach (1928-1947), and then as head coach (1948-1976). In the interview, Shimek describes several other elite track & field athletes who attended Marquette, including Robert Allen, John Bennett, Ralph Metcalfe, and Kenneth Weisner. At greater length, Shimek describes his working relationship with athletic director and coach Conrad Jennings; the return of veterans following the Second World War; the 1960 decision to discontinue football at Marquette; and the reduction in athletic scholarships for track & field athletes in the early 1960s.
